Purposeful Practice and Problem Solving

Venn diagrams let students practise core skills and reason mathematically at the same time. My book is about getting that balance right: practice that makes students better problem solvers. A short, practical workbook from my Tips for Teachers series.

New

The best of these Venns, rebuilt, plus loads of new ones

I have rebuilt the best Venn diagrams from this site on mrbartonmaths.com and added lots of new ones: 67 sets in all, from number bonds to quadratic inequalities.

  • Interactive, so they work straight from the board
  • A built-in sorting exercise for students who are stuck
  • Extension questions for students who finish
  • Search by topic, and filter by key stage

One of the new Venn diagrams on mrbartonmaths.com: two overlapping circles, each labelled with a property, and an example to place in each region.
A Maths Venn on averages and range: three overlapping circles, each with a condition about a set of numbers.
Find a set of numbers for every region. Is any region impossible?

What are Maths Venns?

Each Venn diagram has two or three circles, and each circle is a property, like is a prime number or has a gradient of 2. Students must find an example for every region of the diagram.

To do that, they have to think hard about what each property means and how the properties fit together. Are some regions impossible to fill, or have they simply not found an example yet?

Getting the most from them

  1. Do one together. A student suggests an example, and everyone writes on their mini-whiteboard the region they think it belongs in. Then discuss.
  2. Push for extremes. What is the biggest, smallest or most unusual example you can find for each region?
  3. Make your own. Can students design a Venn with exactly one impossible region?
